Exploring the contested language in the current debate on legislation for the sex industry, Hugh McElveen has used a variety of pinhole and panoramic cameras to draw on elements of surveillance and voyeurism. These images abstract the urban landscape, rendering the familiar strange. The photographs are presented as large format prints, stereoscopes and stills in a Ciné-roman film which features first-person audio testimony of past and present participants from the sex industry. Through the images and mapping the city the ordinariness and pervasiveness of the locations confronts the viewer with the omni-presence of the sex-industry in their community. Viewers are asked to come to an understanding by participating in an analysis of the interviews and locations.
The projection will also be played at various outdoor locations around Dublin during the festival. The program of screenings is available at BioSpace and through twitter @hughmce.
